Accurate weighing is essential for any successful business. Before you invest in new industrial scales, it’s important to consider your requirements, so that you end with equipment that is beneficial for your industry and processes.
Here are 5 things that we think should be on your checklist when buying industrial scales.
Guarantee and services
It’s important to look at the warranty associated with scales, as problems can occur. Likewise if you need custom repairs or parts making, or routine maintenance and cleaning services, look out for this.
Environment
What type of environment will scales be used/stored in? Will scales be used indoors/outdoors, in what type of location, ie: dusty, humid, flammable etc? This is where checking equipment certification and classifications is key (ie ATEX approved). If it’s a wet environment, you may consider stainless scales, which are corrosion resistant. The physical location is important too. Do the scales need to fit within a specific space?
Capacity
Consider the upper capacity that your scales need to weigh. Aside from investigating the overload capacity, you must also consider shock loading and dynamic loading, if items are likely to be dropped onto the platform. Don’t forget you are not just buying for the present, but the future.
Applications
While it might seem basic, think through what you need your scales to do. Will it be part of the manufacturing process (ie: integral), or will scales be stored somewhere else? Is portability crucial? What will you be weighing?
Connectivity
Scales are rarely used in isolation. They need to connect with computers, printers and devices so that data can be shared, stored for QC/traceability purposes, research and development etc. Consider too if your scales need to be connected to other equipment/lines.
Remember be thorough, work with a reputable supplier and be sure to chat through your requirements with them – don’t make your decision before consulting an expert.
